The year 2023 was a historic landmark for Southern Steel Berhad (SSB), commemorating 60 years of progress and success. Founded in 1963 as Southern Iron & Steel Works, the business originated as a joint venture between Southern Rubber, Guan Aik Moh, and Hong Bee Hardware. Building work on its initial galvanized sheet production site in Nibong Tebal started in 1964, with commercial operations launching a year later. To keep pace with rising demand, the enterprise broadened its footprint by adding a rolling mill and a pipe fabrication plant.
SSB further advanced its growth in the 1980s through key alliances and structural expansion. In 1980, NatSteel of Singapore stepped in as a technical partner, contributing essential technical know-how. By 1981, Hong Leong Malaysia joined as a strategic partner after merging its planned steel mill initiative with SSB. Across the decade, the firm substantially reinforced its production capacity by taking over Southern Pipe and Southern Wire while building an in-house steelmaking facility to power long-term development.
In 1993, Southern Steel Berhad reached another major landmark by listing on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. Over the following years, the Group sustained its growth by acquiring Southern Steel Mesh and scaling up its production facilities, further solidifying its market position in the steel sector.
